Digital totems allow you to use this moment to showcase an offer, an organizational message, or dynamic video content. For a company, such a screen is not just an advertising medium. What are digital totems and where do they work best?
A digital totem is a freestanding screen in a vertical enclosure, most often designed to display advertising, informational, or branding content. Depending on its design, it can use an LCD panel or LED modules. An LCD model usually works well in enclosed, controlled spaces, while an LED design offers greater freedom for large formats, unusual dimensions, and applications requiring high brightness.
The vertical format aligns well with how audiences consume mobile content and advertisements in public spaces. It allows for clear presentation of products, prices, promotions, and short videos without needing to take up wall space. A freestanding enclosure is particularly practical where a tenant cannot interfere with the building's structure or wants to change the display's position along with the arrangement.
The most common locations are shops, showrooms, receptions, offices, hotels, restaurants, service points, clubs, and event spaces. However, priorities differ in each of these places. In a shop, price readability and visibility from the traffic flow are important. At an event, quick setup and portability of the equipment will be crucial. In an office, the aesthetics of the enclosure and central message management might be more significant.
How to choose a digital totem for the installation location?
The correct selection begins with the location, not just the screen diagonal. A screen placed close to the viewer must maintain good readability of text and images, but too large a surface in a narrow passage can overwhelm the space. Conversely, a medium viewed from several meters away needs an appropriate size and content prepared for a greater distance.
Before purchasing, it's worth determining four technical parameters:
- viewer distance from the screen and width of the traffic flow,
- lighting conditions, including sunlight falling through the window,
- device operating time per day,
- requirements for network, power, and remote content management.
Screen brightness matters more than impressive content
In a brightly lit space or a shop window, a screen with too low brightness will only look good after dark. Material contrast, surface reflections, and light direction can effectively reduce the readability of promotions. For indoor applications, the device should be chosen according to actual lighting conditions, not catalog photos taken in a shaded room.
If the totem is to stand behind glass, a particularly thorough analysis is needed. Sun, enclosure heating, and reflections may require a solution with higher brightness, more efficient heat dissipation, and adequate component protection. In such a case, the project should be treated as a window installation, not a standard reception screen.
Resolution and pixel pitch in LED constructions
In LED totems, the basic image parameter is pixel pitch, which is the distance between the centers of adjacent pixels. A smaller pitch provides higher detail from a close distance but increases the cost of the screen surface. For a screen viewed from one or two meters, too large a pixel pitch will be noticeable, especially on small text and product photos.
There's no point in choosing the finest pixel for every project. If the medium will be viewed from a greater distance, it might be more cost-effective to use a larger pitch and allocate the budget to a larger surface, a better enclosure, or professional control. The decision should be determined by the viewer's distance, the type of content, and the available space.
Enclosure, mounting, and service access
A freestanding device must be stable. The base should account for the structure's height, the screen's weight, and the risk of contact with customers or internal transport. In high-traffic areas, additional ground securing should be considered. This is not a mounting detail – it affects human safety and the durability of the installation.
Service access is also important. The screen needs space for power connection, signal cables, and potential component replacement. In models based on LED modules, it's necessary to determine whether servicing should occur from the front or the rear. For installation close to a wall, front access often simplifies subsequent maintenance and reduces space requirements.
The enclosure can be part of the brand's display. A black, minimalist design suits most commercial interiors, but in a premium showroom, hotel, or at a trade fair stand, it's worth considering an individual color, branding, or dimension. However, personalization should not hinder ventilation, service, or transport. A good design combines appearance with access to electronics and safe cable routing.
Content control and technical infrastructure
The screen itself is only part of the digital signage system. Properly selected control elements are needed for operation: a media player, controller, signal receivers in the screen, power supplies, and cabling. For LED solutions, the compatibility of the controller with the resolution and configuration of the modules is particularly important.
A simple totem can play content from local memory, which is sufficient for a single campaign at one location. If a company operates a chain of stores, regularly changes messages, or wants to display content depending on the location, remote management will be a better choice. It allows planning broadcasts, updating content without an on-site visit, and responding more quickly to changes in prices, availability, or event schedules.
It's worthwhile to determine who will prepare the materials and in what format already at the design stage. A vertical screen requires vertical compositions, and simply scaling a horizontal spot often results in a less readable effect. The content should have a clear hierarchy: one main message, a clear call to action, and graphics visible from the actual viewer's distance. A few seconds of attention is not enough to read an overcrowded board.
Digital totems in retail, offices, and at events
In retail, a totem can promote a seasonal product, a loyalty program, or an offer available in a specific department. Placed at the entrance, it builds interest, and placed next to a product, it supports purchasing decisions. In gastronomy and hospitality, it can present menus, conference offers, guest information, or messages in multiple languages.
In offices and receptions, the screen serves an informational and representative function. It can display messages for employees, direct guests to meeting rooms, or showcase the company's projects. At events and trade fairs, mobility is more important. A totem should be quick to set up, safely powered, and easy to transport, which is why renting instead of buying is worth considering for this application.
