Advertising display - how to choose an LED screen

An advertising LED screen is not just a large screen playing a video. It is an exhibition system that must remain legible from a specific distance, operate stably for many hours, and fit the installation location. A store window requires a different solution, a building facade another, and a mobile event setup yet another. Proper selection starts with the operating conditions, not just the screen's diagonal size.

Advertising LED screen and the purpose of the display

The first question should be: who will be watching the message and from what distance? In a shopping arcade, the viewer often passes a few meters from the screen. In such a case, high image detail, smooth animations, and the ability to present small elements of the offer, prices, or QR codes are important. An outdoor screen by a busy road works differently. The viewer sees it from several or dozens of meters, so brightness, contrast, and clear, simplified creative content are more important.

An advertising LED screen can perform a strictly sales, informational, or branding function. In a store, it attracts attention to promotions and new products. In a shopping center, it can direct customer traffic or present tenant content. In a club, hotel, or showroom, it creates a dynamic visual background. At an event, it often serves as a stage LED screen, a sponsor medium, and a source of camera footage. Each of these scenarios affects the resolution, format, housing, and control system.

Pixel pitch determines image legibility

Pixel pitch, which is the distance between the centers of adjacent LED pixels, is one of the most important parameters. It is given in millimeters. The smaller the value, the higher the pixel density and the better the image quality viewed from close up. However, this does not mean that the finest pitch should always be chosen. A smaller pixel pitch increases the cost of the screen, and at a long viewing distance, its advantage may be practically invisible.

For indoor applications, such as shop windows, galleries, receptions, points of sale, or conference rooms, fine pitch screens are often chosen. They allow displaying text, product graphics, and video materials from a short distance. For outdoor screens and large-format structures mounted high up, a larger pitch is usually suitable. The image still remains legible, and the investment is better suited to the actual viewing distance.

When designing, it is not worth being guided solely by the minimum technical distance. The actual customer position, aisle width, suspension height, and direction of movement must be taken into account. A screen placed behind a shop window is viewed at a different angle than a medium above the entrance to a building. For text content, an appropriate margin should also be left, and large, legible fonts should be used. Even a high-resolution screen will not improve a design that contains too much information.

Brightness and ambient conditions

The brightness of an LED screen is chosen to match the ambient light. Indoors, an excessively bright screen can strain the eyes and cause reflections on glossy surfaces. Outdoors, the situation is reversed - the screen must remain legible in full sunlight. The brightness values declared by the manufacturer should be analyzed together with the location: southern exposure, roofing, window depth, and type of glass.

In outdoor installations, the housing's resistance to dust and water, heat dissipation, and operation in varying temperatures are also important. Modules, power supplies, and cables must form a system designed for a specific environment. The enclosure protection rating should not be treated as the sole criterion. Equally important are the quality of connections, service access, and the method of securing the support structure.

If the screen operates in the evening or at night, brightness adjustment is needed. This allows for reduced power consumption, improved viewing comfort, and adaptation of emission to the surroundings. In complex installations, the schedule can automatically change brightness and turn the screen on and off at designated times.

Fixed construction, modular screen, or rental

The format of the installation should result from the usage time and mounting method. A fixed advertising LED screen mounted on a facade, pole, or inside a premises requires preparation of the structure, power supply, data transmission, and a service plan. This is a solution for places where the screen is to operate all year round and regularly present campaigns, offers, or operational information.

Modular screens allow for building custom dimensions and aspect ratios. They are suitable as media walls, stage backdrops, club screens, and displays tailored to a specific architectural niche. Before ordering, not only the width and height, but also the total resolution in pixels, should be determined. This determines the best format for preparing video materials.

For short-term events, a rental screen or a ready-made kit rental may be more advantageous. Rental enclosures are designed for frequent assembly, transport, and quick installation. They have different priorities than a fixed structure: low weight, quick connection systems, and ease of use. It is worth remembering that an event screen also requires an operator or a person responsible for the signal source, video processor configuration, and control of played content.

Screen control is part of the investment

An LED display works correctly when its components are selected as a system. In addition to the modules themselves, power supplies, receiving cards, a controller or video processor, cabling, and a content source are needed. For a simple advertising screen, a media player with schedule management may be sufficient. For an LED wall handling cameras, presentations, and stage signals, a scaling processor and an appropriate number of video inputs will be needed.

The method of updating materials is also crucial. For a single location, remote content transmission over the network can be practical. In facilities with limited infrastructure, a local data carrier or a dedicated connection can be used. From the perspective of the medium owner, it is important that daily operation does not require installer intervention. The system should allow for quick changes to promotions, broadcast times, or emergency messages.

LEDMAX EUROPE selects both ready-made LED screens and components needed for building and integrating installations. For custom solutions, it is especially important to define the resolution, mounting method, and type of input signal beforehand. This ensures that the modules, control, and power supply form a compatible set, not accidentally connected elements.

Content must match the screen and location

An LED display attracts attention with movement, but effective advertising should not be a continuous, fast animation. In a shop window, short messages, clear product photos, large prices, and a limited number of elements on the board work best. For street screens, the viewer has even less time. The content should be understandable in a few seconds, without the need to read small text.

When preparing files, work in the native resolution of the LED screen or in proportions that do not force accidental cropping. A screen with an unusual panoramic format requires a separate design, not just stretching a standard graphic. A good practice is to test the materials before launching a campaign, especially when the screen is behind glass, at a great height, or viewed from moving traffic.

A good LED screen should work for the business, not complicate daily operations. Before choosing, it is worth preparing a simple brief: installation location, dimensions of the available surface, audience distance, operating hours, type of content, and expected management method. Such data allows for selecting an advertising LED screen that will be legible, technically justified, and ready for further expansion when exhibition needs increase.
