LED advertising - how to choose the right screen for the location?

A storefront on a busy street has only a few seconds to capture the passerby's attention. In a market hall, the screen works up close, while on a facade, it must remain legible from dozens of meters away. Therefore, LED advertising is not a single product, but a system whose parameters must be matched to the location, audience, and content display method.

A well-chosen LED screen can promote an offer, lead customers to a sales area, display messages, and build brand recognition for many hours a day. A poorly chosen one will be too bright indoors, hard to read in the sun, or unnecessarily costly. When purchasing, it's worth starting not with the screen's diagonal, but with its operating conditions.

LED advertising begins with the installation location

The first decision concerns indoor or outdoor use. An indoor screen usually operates in controlled light, so it can have lower brightness and finer pixels. It works well in shops, showrooms, reception areas, clubs, shopping centers, and exhibition stands.

An outdoor screen requires higher brightness and resistance to precipitation, dust, and temperature changes. In practice, enclosure sealing, heat dissipation methods, service access, and supporting structure are also important. A building facade, an advertising pylon, or a roadside screen is not just a display surface – it's a complete technical installation that should consider loads, power supply, and safe mounting.

Shop windows are a separate category. If the screen is to operate behind glass, light reflections and heating of the space must be considered. In some implementations, an LED poster will be a better choice, while in others, a transparent screen that allows maintaining the view into the store interior. Flexible solutions are also available for displays mounted on irregular surfaces.

Pixel pitch and audience distance

Pixel pitch, denoted as pixel pitch, defines the distance between the centers of adjacent pixels. The smaller the value, the greater the image detail up close. A small pixel pitch is needed, for example, at a reception desk, showroom, boutique, or for a screen placed right next to a communication path.

However, this does not mean that the smallest pitch will always be the best. For a large screen viewed from a distance, the difference in detail may be imperceptible, and the cost of the solution will significantly increase. On a facade, an outdoor stage, or a billboard by a communication route, a larger pixel pitch, matched to the actual viewing distance, will often be more sensible.

It is worth looking at the project from the client's perspective. Is the viewer standing a meter from the screen, passing by it at a distance of several meters, or watching the message from across the square? This answer affects the resolution, graphic material format, and the budget of the entire installation.

The screen format does not have to be standard

LED advertising allows designing surfaces in vertical, horizontal, panoramic, and custom formats. A vertical totem or LED poster effectively utilizes narrow space at an entrance, in a gallery, or at a reception. A panoramic screen works well above a counter, on a media wall, and in a club, where video material can enhance the interior design.

For modular LED walls, the size can be adapted to the architecture of the place. There is no need to limit oneself to a typical television with a predefined diagonal. However, module divisions, frame, cabling, and technical space behind or in front of the screen must be planned.

Brightness, contrast, and content displayed on the screen

Image parameters are only relevant if they match the display conditions. Too low brightness will cause the message to disappear in daylight. Too high can strain viewers indoors, especially when the screen operates in the evening or around the clock. A professional installation should allow brightness adjustment according to the time of day and the nature of the location.

Contrast depends not only on the LED module itself. It is influenced by ambient light, viewing distance, enclosure color, and material preparation. Thin fonts, small prices, and too much text will not be effective on a screen viewed in motion. For outdoor advertising, short slogans, clear product photos, high contrast, and a simple message usually work better.

The material should be prepared for the screen's native resolution. This reduces the risk of blurry images, poorly scaled graphics, and illegible text. For modular screens, it is worth determining the aspect ratio of the surface at the design stage so that advertising content, videos, and presentations do not require continuous manual adjustment.

Control is part of the LED installation

The screen does not operate independently. Proper display requires control components: a controller, receiver card, video processor, or media player, depending on the scale of the solution and the signal source. In a small information installation, simple, repeatable operation is important. In an event wall, handling video signals, scaling, and quick setup before the event will be crucial.

The system should be chosen based on the content management method. If messages are to change according to a schedule, a convenient mechanism for publishing materials is needed. If the screen cooperates with a computer, camera, vision mixer, or digital signage system, signal inputs, resolution, and transmission delays must be considered.

In projects carried out by installers, the compatibility of modules, power supplies, receiver cards, and software is particularly important. Seemingly similar components may differ in configuration method, operating voltage, or supported signal. A complete selection reduces the risk of downtime during startup and simplifies subsequent servicing.

Power supply, installation, and service without costly surprises

A large LED surface requires power distribution to appropriately designed circuits. It is necessary to consider power consumption, protections, wire cross-sections, grounding, and the possibility of disconnecting part of the installation during service work. It is worth calculating the demand for actual emission scenarios, but not omitting the maximum load for bright, dynamic materials.

Equally important is access to the modules. Front service facilitates work where there is no technical space behind the screen. Rear service may be appropriate for freestanding screens, media walls, or structures with back-end facilities. The choice affects the installation depth, construction, and subsequent maintenance costs.

Before ordering, it is worth specifying five elements: location and lighting, viewing distance, target format, content type, and mounting method. For outdoor installations, weather conditions, supporting structure, and administrative requirements are added. For rented solutions, quick installation, cabinet mobility, and resistance to frequent transport are important.

When to choose a ready-made product, and when a modular project?

A ready-made LED poster, totem, or compact screen is practical when quick startup is needed in a venue, point of sale, or at an event. Such a format simplifies selection, transport, and daily operation. It can also be a good solution for companies that want to test digital communication before investing in a larger wall.

A modular project has an advantage when the screen needs to fill a specific recess, facade, stage, or exhibition wall. It offers freedom of dimensions and applications, but requires a more detailed technical design. In this class of implementation, not only the image matters, but also the frame, power distribution, control, ventilation, and service access.

LEDMAX EUROPE offers both ready-made advertising solutions and components for building and integrating LED screens. For the buyer, this means the possibility of selecting the display together with modules, power supply, and control system, instead of combining random elements from different sources.

The best LED advertising does not have to be the largest or have the highest resolution. It should be legible exactly where it meets the audience, easy for the team to operate, and prepared for many years of operation. Every project should start with these three assumptions.
